Events & Policies

Below is an overview of some of our events, projects and policies to give you an idea of what we get up to and the ways we can support you.

Grad Cruise

The Grad Cruise is an annual event at the beginning of year for any recent law school graduates.

This three-hour cruise around Wellington harbour includes drinks and nibbles, great chats and the chance to meet other young lawyers who will be entering the legal profession.

Briding the Gap

Bridging the Gap connects law students in their penultimate and final years to mentors already within the professional world, fostering a connection to provide insight, personal and professional advice into the working world and the transition between being a student and becoming a working professional.

As a part of the programme, mentors and mentees will be invited to partake in networking events and workplace tours. This helps foster wider connections from all areas of the profession.

We really encourage lawyers who have entered into niche specialties or followed unique career pathways to apply to be mentors. It is super valuable for the students to hear about all options they have when joining the profession.

Seminars

We run a series of seminars throughout the year on a range of topics. These vary every year, and we are open to suggestions for topics of interest to our members.

Financial tools and our careers highlights are annual seminars, kindly run with support from our sponsors.

Other seminars include 'know your rights', 'tikanga Māori' and hot topics in legal developments.

Our seminars can be used for CPD points as appropriate. If you would like to use a seminar for CPD, please get in touch.

Mooting Comp

The Committee hosts an annual mooting competition for lawyers with under 5 years PQE in Wellington.

The winner has the option of competing in the national competition every second year against lawyers from other regions in New Zealand (if unavailable, the option will be given to the runner-up).

Young Professionals' Ball

An annual ball open to any young professionals working in Wellington.

We are pleased to announce the 2023 ball which will take place on 9 September @ Dockside.

Other

We run a number of other events throughout the year, including:

quiz nights;
outreach events, connecting young lawyers in the greater wellington region;
wine tours;
sports events in conjunction with VUWLSS;

Health and Safety Policy

You can download our alcohol, drug and safety policy below.

The purpose of this policy is to inform committee members and attendees about the standards of conduct expected at events. It also sets out the committee's policy on alcohol, controlled drugs and personal safety. It explains steps that may be taken if behaviour breaches this policy.
